MIDI newbie

My brother got a keyboard for christmas, nothing really expensive, just the average radioshack brand keyboard. It does have the midi in's and out's as well as built in little speakers. My question is this, could I just connect the midi ins and outs to my computer and use the recording program to record music or do I have to purchase something else to make this work? And is there any information on the web that would help me out in this area?

You can use midi enabled programs (reason, anything that uses virtual instruments). Beyond that, you will need a decent soundcard to actually record sounds from outside your comp
