MIDI Mystery

Here's one for the slueths...

My MIDI is playing at a dribbly low volume, so that even with the Cubase MIDI track turned up full and the Master Volume turned up full the little green sound bar only gets about 25% of the way up.

  1. Audio files play loud and fine. To get them to balance with the MIDI tracks I need to turn them way down, but then I need to max out the master volume and still dont get a good level.
  2. The Velocities set in the Midi track are all high, almost at the top.
  3. The software synth, in this case, the Bass Station from Novation has its volume set to max.

Any ideas? I got some, unfortunately they are only musical ones, so I really want to get this sorted. :)

maybe

Check the MIDI volume in the track itself. Even though your velocities are at full (i.e. 127), the MIDI track itself can have a volume program set low. Look for MIDI controller 7 within the track and see what number it is set at. It may be something low like below 64.

Look at the commands in event view. Maybe the setting from the Cubase console is deceiving you. Or use some the search feature to see if there is a Controller #7 within the track with a corresponding low value.

Lastly, make sure that when you play the Novation Bass sound all by itself, from your MIDI controller, that it plays at the correct volume levels. Do this aside from the project your are creating. That way, you can see if the problem lies within the project or the novation sound itself. Isolate.

Adding to the above post, I would check the MIDI volume if your running a windows PC.

I have no idea how the routing around the windows audio drivers works (and to be honest if your running off ASIO it shouldnt make a difference) but you might want to go into the sound and devices options in the OS and turn everything up to max.
