Midi Midi Midi

Greetings,

Ok, up to now I have just recorded my drum machine (Alesis SR16) straight to .wav and just lived with it. Now, I figure I should finally join the year 2001 and record via MIDI.

Heres the thing, I just don't get why I don't get a signal into some sequencer softwear, i got a demo of Cubase just to play around with it.

So hypothetically;

I got the SR16 sending MIDI signals out through a soundcard adapter cable into my Soundblaster live soundcard being sequeced by cubase?

But nothing is showing up.

I got the SR16 sending midi out, its a simple on/off mode.

If you go to cubase inputs, does there have to be a MIDI input listed as active...cause i don't think there is.
Do you have to "activate" a midi port in software?

Anyways, if anybody can provide info, thanks

Im not real familiar with Cubase, but Im assuming you have to specify your midi drivers and when you arm a track to record , you need to let it know you want to record midi instead of audio.....

now, hopefully you will be using SoundFonts because the GM midi drums are gonna sound crappy compard to the SR16.....

Ok, Im taking a look at a demo of Cubase VST24....dont know which one you have.....

First, you have to record on Track 10 usually....click where it says "track 10".....go to that track, right click on the music note, and select drum track.....

If none of this works, im not surprised, but i tried....

Thats exactly what i am doing man, seriously....

Take a dedicated MIDI track.....select "MIDI" as type of track...and click record or something...

As for specifying midi drivers, I don't know what that is...(that could be a problem) I know my soundcard is good to go.

As for the drum sounds, I was just going to customize the drums in MIDI, then during the final mix, us the SR16 out to produce the drum track.

...makes sense to me more or les.

Is there a better way to do this?

that method sounds better.....of course some of the SoundFonts Ive heard are nothin to sneeze at....

I said driver, but I meant to specify that you wanted the SBLive midi as your input....what version of cubase is the demo?.....

do you have any midi tracks you could import in to see if it will play a midi file?....

First let me say thanks for the reply, appreciate it.

Second I downloaded the Cubase VST demo a week ago, so its the newest demo version available.

Interesting note:

When you check under the Audio/Inputs section it lists SB Live wave device L/R.

It don't show any damn MIDI inputs....so my midi input is not Active? Cause it does all that system configuration when you install it, so i figured it would find everything.

I will try to open a midi file just to make sure I am not in the twilight zone, but now i think its my midi port.
Of course, since I have no idea how to activate a midi port, that takes me nowhere fast.

I'm not familiar with Cubase but if it's a midi sequencer, there has to be an option somewhere in the menus that takes you to MIDI settings. If you're looking in the "Audio/Inputs" section, you probably won't see any options for midi because midi isn't audio. Most of the midi programs I have default to using my soundcards midi banks and I have to tell them to use my external midi device instead. So keep looking for midi settings if you can.

Also the SR16 has a few settings you have to change on it. You mentioned that it's set to midi out. Also, you might need to set it to "clock in" so it can receive clock signals from the software. Make sure the SR16 is set to receive on channel 10, I think this is more for playback but you'll need that working too.

If nothing still works it could be your midi port. Opening a midi file in Cubase like you said is a good way to test it. But as long as we're debunking hardware, you should probably make sure it's not your midi ports on the SR16. Try plugging in a different midi device to test this.
