I have been using a MIDI controller for about 10 years, but have never fully understood the complete concept of mapping. Is it as simple as it sounds? What I want to do is use my Boss DR770 drum machine to utilize my sampletank 2.5 drumkit "sounds". My controller has a MIDI IN, OUT and THRU port, and my Boss unit has an IN and OUT port. Do I connect the Boss unit from the OUT port to the IN port on my MIDI controller, and if so, can someone guide me in the direction to mapping basics? What about latency issues? My DAW is the Tascam US 428, USB 1.1, so it does have some latency issues, and I do not want to compound them by daisy chaining a bunch of MIDI devices... Someone please correct me if I have the wrong idea, I really want this to work!

Yes, the midi out of the drum machine plugs into the midi in of the tascam unit. You will probably want to connect the midi out of the tascam into the midi in of the drum machine so you can slave it to midi clock so it stays in tempo with the host. I dont know how the DR midi output format looks like so you may have to play around with what sound is assigned to what note (it's probably GM) but once you know that, it is just sending the midi to sample tank and assigning the samples to whatever you want
