Regarding entry-level midi keyboards, the $100-$250 stuff, is there generally anything to choose between the products of the two companies?

Thank you.

:)

Depends on what you want: How many keys? Weighted keys? Buttons? Knobs? Faders?

:) I'm sure you can find something in that price range.

I expect you're right. I'm just wondering if either company has a somewhat better reputation.

I've always bought M-Audio keyboards. I'm not too sure about what Alesis has to offer, but I can vouch for M-Audio's quality.

I had an Alesis Q49 and wouldn't advise you to buy it. Spend more and get more. The happiest I've been with an inexpensive controller is the Arturia Laboratory. I bought the 49-key package. The Laboratory software is decent, their VST synths are much better. You should be able to find they hybrid package where you get 3 free VST synths. The keyboard is very solid and plays well. Plus, there are plenty of assignable buttons and 9 sliders (think Hammond). I'm using it as a second tier with my JX-8P. The Arturia Laboratory 49 package will run right at $250 if you shop around. There is a HUGE difference in the quality of construction vs. the Q49.
