Hello again,
I am getting closer and closer to knowing something about computers and how to make music with them. Ok. I have decided to buy a PC with:
- 800MHz Pent III
- 20 GB Hard Drive
- 128 MB SDRAM
- 32 MD 3D AGP Grafik
- 16 Bit Sound
Now I need to make it work with my Roland JV 1010 synth. #
What else do I need?
I know I need a master keyboard.
I am looking at the Roland ED PC-180A. Is it ok? Will it make good music? It has 49 keys.
I THINK I need a sound card.
I have been told that 16 bit sound just sucks and isn’t good for real serious music making. I think I will need a 24-bit sound card. Right?
I have been looking at:
- Creamware Pulsar
- Yamaha DSP Factory 2416
- RME Hammerfall
- And Sound Blaster Live.
Which is the best for the money? I mean I am not on an UNLIMITED budget here. I have a little bacon to throw down, but can’t sell the kids or anything. (I don’t have kids, but needed them for the joke).
I THINK I also need a MIDI/Audio Interface.
I am not sure about this thing because it seems like some of these “sound card units” have MIDI in and out jacks. I will also use a microphone to record my vocals so I will need a low impedence input, and I will need a high impudence input for my guitar. These seem to standard on all hard disc recorders (Roland VS 1880, Yamaha AW 4416 etc...) But are they standard on MIDI/Audio interfaces? This is really important because I do not want to “mike an amplifier” to get my guitar sounds. Maybe later when I get a bit more experienced in “recording techniques.” Right now I just want to get some guitar tracks down. I know that there isn’t a “digital program” that can simulate perfectly the warm distortion etc.. from a real tube amp. But right now i am just trying to learn. But I don’t want to buy some bullshit “learn thist first” type of shit and then have to throw it away in a year. I need the big guns now. I have the money now and in 2 years might not. Now for a digital interface, I have been looking at:
- MINDPRINT AN/DI Pro
- MOTU 24 i for PC/Mac (this thing costs slose to 2 grand so it better do EVERYTHING)
- The RolandED USB MIDI interface UM-4
- and the RolandED UA-100G
I think that I need a mixer too.
This is where I become a bit skeptical. Roland markets this package type thing and it comes with the ROLAND ED U-8 USB Digital Studio. The literature that I have it all in German so I can not read it. But in the picture there is this little mixer and a box of software. Now I have decided that I want to use the Logic Audio Gold or Platinum 4.5 software. So their Cubasis vSt is of no intrest to me. (Or is it? You guys tell me.)
Anyway, do I need this mixer or not?
Here is the most IMPORTANT part of this thread. If you ignore the entire thread, please ANSER THIS ONE PART....
Can someone take me through step by step what you do to record a guitar track onto a compter with software? I mean everything from “Take the guitar out of the case and turn the computer on” ... to... “Listen to your recorded track.” Describe what all goes into it. Hardware wise I mean. Do I plug the guitar into a pre-amp, or directly into the interface and just use the built in effects of the software? And address the question about the Low and High Impedence imputs that I need for guitar and vocal recording.
Well anyone that answers all these questions truely is a God send and I will surely “dance at their wedding.” (An onld expression that my mother always said. It doesn’t mean shit to me other than I will be be eternally greatful.)
Thanks guys.... really!
Mike
