OK let me start this off by saying I am a midi idiot, I mean I get the basics of it (i.e. what it is and its purpose...) However I've never utilized it my self.
I own the Yamaha md8 multi track mini-disc recorder wich I use for writing purposes...though I really don't plan on trying to master off of it...I am a bit of a perfectionist and I like clarity of sound to get my ideas across...this being said the md8 does not get along with my drum machine(boss dr 660) AT ALL!!
if I record the drums on the md8 it sounds like crap (blips and burps wich I recognise as jitter mostly noticeable on high hat or high pecussive sounds). If I record the drums directly to my burner or tape deck or pc for that matter they sound fine...so my low cost solution is to sync the machine(dr-660) to the md8 and record the drums @ mixdown...this leads us to my question(sorry so wordy...) DO I NEED A SEPARATE DEVICE OTHER THAN THE MD8 AND THE DR660 TO DO THIS...IF SO WHAT...AND IF NOT HOW DO I DO THIS (PLEASE DON'T REFER ME TO THE MANUAL)????

I don't know. It depends on whether each of your devices can either follow or send synch to a MIDI clock from/to an outside source. The drum machine almost certainly can; I don't know about the 4-track minidisk recorder.

The idea is: set one device to be the master, and to send synch messages (Start, Stop, Continue, Song Position Pointer). Set the other device to be the slave to MIDI synch messages coming in and enable it to start when it gets the messages.

Just exactly how to do that will, I'm afraid, involve reading the dread manuals... or, if you're extremely lucky, someone else here will read your post and say, hey, I have those exact same devices and I do that every day, I can tell hime exactly what he wants to know -- and then hope that he can write better than the tech writers that did the manuals could...

well....hmmm Im not even sure why you bothered to reply but thanx
my 8-track mini-disc can transmit mtc and midi clock
and my drum machine can cirtainly recieve it...I geuss what I'm really asking is do I need a separate sequencer just to lock tempo? and if not is it as simple as plugging in the midi chords and setting the switches to midi? or is it a bunch of programming (other than the already recorded drum patterns/songs.........)
