MIDI hesitating on playback

I downloaded a MIDI file of Amazing Grace. I open it in Sonar, tweak it a bit, remove the guitar parts, etc, etc. I use a MIDI interface cable (joystick port), and run it into my Yamaha W7 synth/sequencer for playback. The problem is, every downbeat is just a bit late, even though the event editor tells me that all the notes are falling right on time. This happens when I playback thru my soundcard's FM synth, too. Thinking I might be having a polyphony issue, I ran a CAL program that removes duplicate notes, and it removed 32 instances. I've also quantized each track, as well as the whole thing, and I can't get rid of this hesitation. There's just no drive there at all. I slowed the tempo down from 68bpm to 30 bpm, and played back with the metronome on, and I can hear these notes not hitting with the metronome, yet when I try to move them, they either go too far back or to far up. Is there something I can do concerning the grid spacing? Does this sound like something I can fix in Sonar, or maybe the problem is in my keyboard? Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me out, here.

one more thing.............

is it possible to view all midi tracks at once in the same piano roll? I think that could be helpful in lining things up.

You need to toggle the "snap to grid" in piano roll. Small icon, bootom right. And by right clicking on the grid icon, you can choose a whole host of options regarding timing that will keep you amused for hours:D

I'll leave it other more experienced posters here to answer your other questions. Your lagging sounds like latency to me. You need to describe your system and o/s for the members to have a good idea what they are dealing with to answer your question fully.

Thanks. I HATE describing my system, cuz the second I do, I get discredited, and written off as a wannabee. I have an HPPavillion, Celeron, 533mhz, winME, 40g hd, 256 ram. Now..........that's the FAMILY computer.....MY machine is the hand-me-down....Packard Bell, 233, 128 ram, 20g hd, win98se. My soundcard is a stock Aztech Audio 2320, and it does have WDM drivers, so, believe it or not, Sonar does run on this system! I recorded and mixed down 6 tracks of audio along with 2 MIDI tracks so far. Of course, I can't put much on there in the way of effects, but I really don't need to. If I do, I can just edit each wav in cool edit, and import the tweaked wav into Sonar. I messed with the midi buffers, but it's not changing anything. I think there might be something with this one particular midi file, cuz I haven't had this problem before. Please don't slam me for the pee-pee puter.....I'm working on it!!!!

As I understand it, WIN 98 and WDM drivers don't get along too well so that could be where you are having your latency problems. I have win 98 and a soundblaster card with a 400 megHz PII, and as long as I stay away from DXi synth's. I don't have a latency problem. This uses the older MME drivers. I will upgrade to win XP shortly to cure my latency problem so I can use DXi's.

Easy! :)

In the Piano Roll, press the button with two arrows, one pointing up and the other pointing down. Select the tracks you want.
