Midi help

Hi i have a YamahaPSR-290 keyboard with midi-interface, hooked with my computer (on gameport using midi to gameport cable)

Can someone pls recommend a good software for recording music from keyboard . I tried acid, cakewalk but coudnt figure out wats wrong. The sound I play on keyboard is completely diff from what comes out on computer..... Like the instrument sound on keyboard is diff form compute.

You're going to have to delve into the world of midi basics ---
