here's the gist:

recording into a project mix i/o running protools 8. i have a yamaha s90 connected to my computer and it's recording midi.

here's the problem. i record the first track (bass) with no problems. however, when i set up the second track (drums) the first midi track's instrument changes from a bass to whatever drum sound i'm using.

another thing that's happened (though not doing it now, but certainly related i'm guessing) is that if i set the yamaha to any instrument, during playback of the recorded midi track the yamaha automatically changes to the recorded track's instruments.

could someone PLEASE tell me what the problem at least SOUNDS like: why can i not record discrete tracks independently without the yamaha changing the both the recorded track's instrument if a new sound is selected on the yamaha AND why when playing back only, and the yamaha is on a different instrument, the recorded sound will change the yamaha automatically, remotely

thanks

A program change is getting recorded with the midi track or being set by the midi track properties. I dont use PT so I cant help beyond that. Check the midi events or look at the midi track and see if it assigned there..

After you record the first MIDI track reset the input of that track to "none".

About the second part it sounds like you are using the same MIDI channel for each subsequent track. So every time you change the instrument every track that is receiving that MIDI channel will revert to the new instrument sound.

Accepted practice is to use MIDI channel 10 for drums only.

I don't know about the S90 in particular, but you should be able to assign MIDI channels to each instrument on the Yammie depending on how many multi-timbral voices are available.

So Bass would be sent on channel 1 (or whatever) from PT and received on channel 1 on the S90, drums on channel 10, and so forth; up to the voice limit of the S90.

Another solution is to record the audio track of the MIDI performance and use that audio track for monitoring while doing further dubs, and mute the original MIDI track. You may want to lock the MIDI track after you have edited it to final so it doesn't get screwed up somehow in later editing.

Dunno if this is relevant, but a lot of synths let you block Program Change messages coming through the MIDI port.

thanks for the assist, guys. after further research in the yamaha manual i found that 'multi-timbrel' is what i was looking for. however, i found my solution under the sequence play feature. within it, i was able to create a template, which can comprise of 16 voices output on the respective channels. i created a template, assigned bass to midi channel 1, drums on 2. doing so resulted in discrete and independent playback of the respective sounds

wow, midi is very complicated. still not sure why it works this way with the sequence play as the multi-timbrel sounded as if that was what i needed to do.

anyway, it works.

thanks all!

MIDI itself isn't all that complicated. It just lends itself well to a lot of complicated features that gear manufacturers dream up. :D

I think it falls under the sequence aspect because the s90 is designed to be a "workstation" style keyboard. You could store your sequences in the keyboard and edit them too, but it's so much easier in software than on an LCD menu display.

yes, i agree. after further consultation with my manual, it appears there is voice editing software for my S90 that i'll install. much better to work off the GUI on my monitor than my s90
