Look Mom, I can play!
Is there something in Sonar that prevents midi fade in and out in clips? I want to use these tools/techniques and they don't work. I can't get the fade icon at the begining and/or end of a clip view that I do with audio clips. Is this normal? I have HS2002 and it doesn't say fades won't work with midi in the help files.

Also, in audio and midi, I cannot automate my faders, the Record Automation radio button in the Transport section is greyed out. According to the help files, it should work. The track volume window gets outlined in red when armed....but the rad button is still disabled. Anyone out there with HS or Sonar got the same problem or am I missing something here?

the Record Automation radio button in the Transport section is greyed out.

I don't use this particular feature, but you have to arm the fader for automation before the the button becomes active. Right click with your mouse on the fader slider and choose "arm for automation" from the pop-up menu. That should activiate your button.

Also, you can't use the "slip edit" fade on a midi track. You'll need to record it to audio first.

Thanks for the reply Dachay but ist stranger than that. I am arming the automation and it confirms it by outlining the clip volume display in red...but the Automation enable rad is still greyed out.@#?!!

So I tried it on another recording. This time it works okay! So what is different about the other file? Any thoughts?

Also, I can slip edit my midi clips. What is going on here too? But still no fade out or in on midi clips, maybe I'll have to convert it to audio first.

Paul - don't know what's going on with the arm for auto situation. If you can get it to work OK in another file, then obviously you know how to use it. So I don't know what's going on.

You can "slip edit" a midi clip, but not "slip edit fade" (i.e, the triangle in the upper right/left corner of the clip). I'm not sure that's the right term for it, but I use it to distinguish from other ways of applying fades and because it pretty much works just like slip editing.

Sorry Dachay, I misunderstood your reply. You are right, there is no slip fade edit facility in midi, it has to be converted first. Strange that, don't quite understand the motivation for that limitation?

As for the Arm for automation, that is so weird. Why one recording and not another? I feel an email to 12 tones tech support coming on.

You can't slip edit the MIDI because of its nature. It is not sound but performance data. Say you had a clip with a note starting at bar 3, beat 1. If you slip edited the begimning of this MIDI clip, you would be chopping off the moment when the Note On message is sent. Hence, silence. There is no way to send a message to play a note starting somewhere in the middle of the sound. You might be able to do it with MIDI volume messages, but you still need the Note On to start when it did...

Ahhhhhh....NOW I understand. Logical when you think about it. Thanks AlChuck
