One Hit Wonder
Hi guys. Last night I tried to record a Roland electronic drum set via midi using Sonar recording software. The recording went fine... except the snare drum was nowhere to be found. Kick, cymbals, toms, etc., all recorded and played back fine. But the snare didn't record at all. There is a view in Sonar called piano roll, and at first I assumed the snare was just being routed to a different midi note. However, in scrolling up and down the entire piano keyboard, I could not find a notation that matched the snare.
We changed the kit selection on the Roland, and we were able to get a snare recording on some of the other kits. However, the one kit that our drummer likes and uses would not work.
I am not familiar with the Roland, but if the snare is being assigned wrong, is there a way to reassign the midi note that corresponds to the snare? Otherwise I don't know how to address the issue.
My intent, btw, is to record the kit via midi, and then use the midi to record each individual kit item to its own audio track using the Roland to produce the audio sounds. The reason for not just recording audio to start with is that all I would get is a stereo track of the entire drum kit. I want to get each item (HH, snare, toms, etc) on their own separate track. This way I can eq just the kick, or raise the volume on just the high hat, etc. Midi gives me everything I need, and Sonar has a function which splits the single midi track to individual tracks separately for each note. It's then simply a matter of playing back one track at a time and recording the output.
