I'm using cakewalk 9.0 prof. with windows xp and I can't get it to play my midi files through roland RA 95 .My old windows 98 had mpu- 401 and it worked fine but this one doesn't and I've been told you can't use it with xp.Can anyone help?

The MPU-401 is a Midi I/O-device built in on your motherboard, and of course you can use it with WinXP. If it's not there, then you have probably disabled it in BIOS. Just undisable it and WinXP will find it and install drivers for it at next bootup. :)

...or you need to install your motherboard firmware driver for WinXP. BTW, was it the original Roland MPU-401 card
woo hoo, that was the oldest PC MIDI interface if so... :)

I"ve gone into device manager and enabled mpu 401 but it says for some reason theres a conflict. The yellow exclamation point comes up.How will I know if my sound card supports the mpu-401??/

You are probably having a conflict because this is an old card that's not plug-'n-play compatible and needs its IRQ and such set manually. There might be dip switches on the card you need to set differently, etc. Don't you still have the documentation fopr the card? You should also be able to find all kinds of info on how to set up older legacy devices under XP. Try Microsoft's KnowledgeBase, and try this site: http://www.annoyances.org/
