Is it goingto cost big bucks for a decent converter ? If you can help me out I wont make a stupid purchase.Thanks.... Anyone? I need some assistance.

What do you mean by a "midi converter"??? Midi is an instruction set, not audio - so what is it exactly that you want to convert?

Sorry, I am in need of something so I can hear the midi through the Layla20 sound card config. With Midi I cant hear anything. What am I doing wrong ?

As I said, MIDI is an instruction set... midi commands are sent to a sound module that reproduces the sound instructions the midi "program" tells it.... the audio comes from the device receiving the midi commands sent to it.

MIDI on its own has no "sound"...........

So what do I need to hear it ? I have an Alesis studio 24 Cakewalk9, Layla20,
I have been running everything fromLayla back into the Alesis for mixing...... What is missing?

You use MIDI to send sound commands to a sound module, keyboard, drum-machine -- any instrument/sound device that is midi-capable.

You need a midi-interface card if your Layla isn't a equipped with midi-in/out connectors (which look like European DIN 5-pin plugs).... the midi out connects to midi in on say a keyboard, and you connect the keyboard's audio out(s) to your mixer.

IM pretty sure the Layla is midi, but the biggers problem Ive found has been that blasted Cakewalk, for some reason CW has always had these problems, I spent days trying to get CW to understand my audio card on my old computer, its the defaults when you load the software, its not smart enough like some other software to load defaults that result in playback ready. Its like getting and 8 bus console with 23 inputs, but 1/2 of the controls not being labeled or in some arbitrary location. I blew that PC last year, and bought a used "Boeing Surplus Dell" and it worked fine with the built in sound chip, but add on a secondary card and CW gets all screwed up. None of my other software has that problem. Ive logic Audio Platinum, 3 Versions of Sound Forge, and even ProTools free works, but the cakewalk wants me to jump through hoops for simple midi. Also check the Windows based volume controls which are independent of the card and software, alot of times the midi isnt configured there either.

Good Luck!
