I am having trouble with Cakewalk so I decided to convert my midi to audio in pro tools with pro tools free. But I can't figure out how to convert midi to audio in protools. Please help. I am using pro tools free on Windows Me. Thanks

You cannot "convert" MIDI to audio, you can only record the results of something that responds to the MIDI messages with audio output -- a synth, whether external via MIDI cables (and audio out from the module into the soundcard) or internal (an on-board synth chip on a Sound Blaster-type card or a software synth).

I have no experience with Pro Tools Free but the basic idea must be the same: enable a track to record audio, set its input to be from the line inputs if an external synth is playing your MIDI, or the MIDI synth chip if you have an SB, or the WAV output if its a softsynth. Press record and the MIDI messages trigger the sound-producing device and its output gets recorded to an audio track.

You can do what AlChuck said in Sonar too. Just enable your soundcard to record everything that is playing, then arm an audio track and play the midi one. ;)

recording midi

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately those are things that I have tried in both Cakewalk and Pro-Tools. I never had a problem with it before. I thought it was something I was doing wrong but now I think it is my soundcard. Pro-tools gets audio signal but won't record the midi. And Cakewalk gets no audio signal, won't record and will only play midi. I tested my soundcard with a mic test and my computer says it is working properly. I am able to record audio with my windows sound recorder and pro-tools but not in Cakewalk. I tried reinstalling Cakewalk, no difference. Do you think it is my soundcard eventhough mycomputer says it is working properly. Also in my device manager it says drivers for my multimedia audio pci device are not installed. Could it be that? This is obviously a question for Midows Me users. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like operator error to me.

How do you have the soundcard's recording inputs set? Maybe this will help:

For Cakewalk, go through the step-by-step tutorial in the help system or look at the Cakewalk website.

For Pro Tools, I'm afraid I don't know the details.
