MIDI controller: lower latency with USB or MIDI I/O?

When connecting a midi controller with USB option (such as an M-Audio Radium), which is better as far as getting the lowest latency: USB or MIDI in/out via the soundcard/interface?

In case it makes any difference, I use Sonar 2.2 on a PIII/800 512RAM WIN98SE with dual hard drives, and an Aardvark Q10 soundcard/interface using ASIO driver.

As long as you mentioned MIDI world, either will do just fine. The main concern about latency is about your audio setup.

Most of latencies can be caused by crapy soundcard (on board specialy), poor driver (reminds me to always use ASIO or at least WDM driver!) or turning on input monitoring feature. Heavy DXi (which opens large audio samples) also needs extra attention.

Set the latency in your soundcard control panel to, say, 128 samples.
