mid and side qustion

hey there..


when using this technique i realize the the side microphone creates a stereo spread depending on how far the side fader are up, thus giving a sense of space and room ambiance.

My question is.... would you use a reverb in conjunction with this technique? and would recording a vocal track (simultaneously) with another mic inter-fear with this process

You can if you like, but I'd be inclined to use it on the master.
I guess the point of mid/side a lot of the time is to capture a natural representation of a live performance, so it stands to reason to have the same reverb across the board.

I can imagine using a real tight room reverb on a jazz band or something, if the recording is pretty dry.
 
on the master? i assume you would do that if you were recording a solo classical guitarist or choir etc..... what if i have other track recorded separately

If your overall aim is to emulate a live performance, then verb on the master isn't necessarily a bad idea.

That asides, I meant put verb on the mid side collection rather than individual tracks. Maybe send your M/S to a stereo bus and verb that if you don't want to effect the rest of the mix.
 
Keep in mind when using MS you will have more ambiance in stereo, but when the mix is played back in mono the side microphone will cancel out because of the encoding necessary for this technique, thus your ambiance will also be canceled. Basically when played back in mono you will only be hearing the signal from the one directional (mid) microphone you recorded with.
