I'm being practically given an old shure unidyne III mic but it has a four pin connector.

What's the deal with these? Do I just need a cable with four pin at one end and 3 pin at the other end to go into the pre? Or is there an adapter or something?

thanks

I could be wrong but on my old EV 664's I believe it allowed you to switch from high to low impedence by moving the leads in the cable.

Thanks PS, but presumably I'd need a cable with four pin at one end? Are these readily available, and does it make sense that I'd need to have a regular 3 pin xlr at the other end to go into my pre?

This might help, from Shure's site:

We can tell you what pins to use at the microphone connector. Your 545 microphone has a four pin MC4F Amphenol connector. Pins 1 and 2 of this connector are the high impedance output. Pin 2 is the hot. To wire this output for a quarter inch connector, connect pin 1 to the sleeve (ground or shield) and pin 2 to the tip of the connector. The mating connector to the MC4F is Amphenol's part MC4M.

If you have the original Shure cable that was offered with the mic, the shield would go to the sleeve of the 1/4 inch connector and the red to the tip. The other two conductors remain un-connected.

For further information, Pins 3 and 4 are the low impedance balanced output. Pin 4 is the plus, pin 3 is the minus, and Pin 1 is the ground or shield.

We do not carry these connectors, but you can buy new connectors from Connector World Supply - U.S. phone: 206-789-7525).

You can also get pre-wired cables from Tom Ellis - U.S. phone: 214-328-3225 or email: tomsmics@flexcomp.com.

That's very useful, thanks arjoll.

I used to work with a lady from Invercargill, small world eh?
