mics on guitar amps... condenser or dynamic?

Save your money for the Avantone. Then you wont have to buy again for quite a long time.

Agreed Cavedog I can't say enough good things about Avantone microphones ..... Except sometimes it's hard to pull up their web site.
 
Basically right. They are the same mic capsule but the different design of the grill/popshield does give a slightly different frequency response and sensitivity. Here's a comparison of the measured response of the two microphones:

Since the capsules are the same, the difference is purely down to the grill materials and design.

Wow - who would of thought the grill could have such an impact on the frequency graph! I guess a lot of people have... :LOL:

That's the idea behind the grill mod performed by Michael Joly. The grill has a factor on how the microphone acts while capturing the source.
 
I'd definitely go with a large condenser mic on a guitar amp, you'll get that nice and warm yet accurate sound from the recording. A tube condenser mic would be a big plus if you got that.
