I play mostly for garage rock/melodic rock, vox ac30 clean/overdriven/distortion tones. Think something like Billy Talent, or maybe our lady peace.

I actually don't have a shure sm57, I have a shure/prologue sm57 wannabe. I like it, and it usually translates the tones of my amp to my recordings quite accurately. It does seem a bit transparent and doesn't add anything per se, which is good, but sometimes I want something to add some character as well.

Anyway, what are some mic's (under $200 I guess) that you use for micing guitar amps, and why do you use them??

Nady RSM-2 ribbon is pretty nice on guitar cabs. Smooth sound. Good for clean or distortion. $200.

GLS-ES57s....cheap supstitute.

GLS-ES 57

Not lloking for a cheap substitute. I have one. Looking for something other than 57's that people like to use as well.

For high gain gits, I've been liking the Sennheiser e609s. It's a little bright, but that can easily be managed at the source (or post-tracking). My last set of tracks required no eq'ing. :)

I like my Beyer M500 and SM7 on guitar cabs.

Though there's plenty of good reasons why the the SM57 is the standard.

This Question has been asked over and over again...

But anyway I like a MD421 on Electric Guitar nice smooth sound, doen't work for all genres but when it works it really works good. :D

If you're really cranking it up I'd say audix i-5. I really like it for heavy, loud guitars so I'd say give that a shot.

I second that

I might as well fourth it!I picked up an E609 from GC a week ago and like it pretty well.I've been using mine mostly with an SM57(was using two 57's)Bright is not a word I would use for it on my rig (more like-darker) and I've tried it with many different placements now(though I've heard some bright sounding clips using it). Here anyway...It seems to pick up more of the bottom end and the 57 seems to pick up more of the top. It's good for close mic'ing and sounds pretty decent by itself (especially if you're catching a bad case of the fizzey's with the other mic :D ).So yeah...I'd recommend the 609.My experience with it so far has been pretty positive...by itself or in combo with a 57.I haven't tried the Audix i5 yet,but I intend to pick one up soon.

E609 and i-5 are two mics ive heard and been dying to try myself.

Matt

e609, i5, SM7, MD421, various LDCs.... What ever other mic you can get your hands on. If it sounds good it is good.
