Microsoft releases SP1 for Windows XP, IE6

This afternoon Microsoft released the long-awaited Service Pack 1 for Windows XP.

Attention - Unless you are positive that you are using a 100% legal copy of Windows XP, DO NOT INSTALL THIS SERVICE PATCH. Part of the code within this patch is designed to shut down any systems using a number of compromised or otherwise hacked serial numbers. If this happens your system may not be recoverable.

Microsoft also released Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer 6 this afternoon. Those of you using XP or 2000 w/IE6 may want to try this out.

Both of these items can apparently be installed only through Windows update. This is highly annoying - a download of the patch itself would be much easier, but Bill's controll freaks have apparently decided that we are not to be trusted installing things like this ourselves. The XP SP1 is about a 45 meg download, so I don't advise trying to update through dial-up. However there does appear to be an un-install option for each so they can be removed later if needed.

I installed both of them this afternoon on my work PC, and no smoke cloud yet...
 
I've seen a copy of the XP service pack floating around on the web for a week or two that supposedly doesn't shut down illegal OS'. I'm not worried either way, of course, as I'm legit - but IMHO if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm just waitin' for the penguin to grow up. :D
 
No puffs of smoke or funky behavior so far.

Took about twenty minutes. That included getting kicked off of the MS server once.

just to mention...

i can confirm that you can install the SP1 onto a computer without a 'purchased' copy of windows. i didnt notice any differences at all for most applications...

Try rolling your system clock ahead 240 days and then come back and tell us what happened.
 
Perhaps I should elaborate about the "shutting down your system" part. Actually I already did, in an earlier post...

Microsoft has identified a number of "corporate" serial numbers that have been heavily pirated. One in particular which starts with FCKGW has been all over the net. The service pack contains a list of these numbers, and if it finds a match, it will appear to install normally but will actually shut down your system on reboot.

Of course hackers being what they are there are already stolen license numbers which are not in SP1s "list" being circulated all over the web. I have also seen some "beta" SP1s that supposedly had this "feature" removed but I would not want to try them. My copy's legit, so I wanted to wait for the real thing. Have installed it on my home PC and 3 at work so far, no problems yet.
 
So I got myself a legit version of XP Pro, but haven't installed it yet. I hear that it needs to be registered with Microsoft before running it. If this is so, how does one reformat and not be accused of pirating? (registering again and again). Plus, isn't it a hassle? Just curious. Thanks.
 
It has a very crude registration program that after so many days makes you register it(you get to run it for a while before this happens). Its easy to disable, there is a simple little proggy out there that IIRC just resets the date every day so that you never run out of time. I refuse to activate anything, so I ran this and no problems at all. And yes, I do have a legit copy.

If you do register, and reformat, you just register again, and if you change hardware, you have to re-register

Solution to all this activation cr*p: Get Windows 2000!!!!
I've never seriously played with XP, but 2000 has worked flawlessly with my Music HW and SW, and it's stable as h*ll.
And I have a pretty meager PC - Dell Dimension PIII, 450Mhz, 256MB RAM. Oh, and did I mention that Win2K doesn't require any activation? (unfortunately, Office XP did :( )

I heard the same thing about the initial release of XP, and we set it up with a packet sniffer for a couple of weeks to see what it was doing. Nothing happened.
 
a friend was telling me about that. The message was written by a person i've talked with a few times. Could be a crock, but knowing microsoft i wouldn't put it past them. Yea, i also heard the same thing about xp when it was released, maybe they're upgrading it?

Your days are counted as well. Microsoft is working on ways around this.
 
Considering that virtually every file sharing program out there (like KaZaa) install Spyware on your PC, I don't think it is a big surprise that Microsoft has some too. It's been known for awhile that Media Player 7 & 8 track what music & video files you play back.

I put up a post in this forum awhile back about add-aware - its software that hunts for Spyware on your PC. You can download it here:

As for activation, if you have an individual (non-corporate) copy you can activate by phone or by internet. Yes if you re-install you have to do it again. It is certainly an annoyance, but from what I've been told it's not much of a hassle. You just say "I reinstalled" and that's about it.

I've heard of the crack that turns off activation but have no experiance in trying it. There is also a set of instructions for changing your XP serial number. These I have tried - a couple of dumbasses where I work went ahead and upgraded their own PCs with a pirated "corporate" copy. I had to change their serial numbers over to our own legal corporate copy. Otherwise when they applied SP1 they would have been SOL. I should have deleted all their data just on principle - assholes. It's a shame I'm such a nice guy :D

The crack works well, I use it at home. At work, we have corporate. I will look up the name of the proggy when I get home, I dont remember it.
 
Thank's RWhite, reading all post in this thread worth than reading Microsoft's readme files... I'll be here if I notice any weird things happen to my system. I use legal anyway... nothing to loose. ;)
