microsoft patches

whats the deal with these patches needed to make a soundcard or whatever else work properly.
i will probably need to get one with my tascam us-122 soundcard cause my computer is messed by some virus.
but anyway just would like to know what these patches do .

Patches are simply upgrades, updates, corrections to programs, etc. that a manufacturer will put out so that you can update or fix whatever hardware drivers or other software that you have purchased from them.

When upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 for example, you would have to go to various manufacturer sites to download patches so that your hardware and certain programs will work properly under W2K.

Sometimes a company will fix a bug, or issue an update or upgrade as new technology becomes available.

Microsoft is forever coming out with patches to their operating systems.
