Ok, so I'm a complete noob in every sense of the word. I got a Behringer Condenser mic with the hope of doing some home recording with an Evo N610c Laptop. I'm using a Behringer PS400 phantom power supply, Got the mic going through that and then got the other lead going into the mic jack in the laptop. Sounds simple, yet I seem to be having real trouble getting a decent sound, I believe it has something to do with the laptop having an internal mic...though, if I turn the internal mic off in the sound settings it won't pick up any sound at all!
What I'm really asking is can somebody go through the sound set up in windows xp bearing in mind the mic and laptop I'm using. I use Sonar 7 to record with, though I haven't got as far as recording with it yet as the sound test quality is more than shabby.
Thanks in advance for any ideas :)

You need a soundcard or audio interface.

It might be worth investing a couple of hundred bucks on an MBox mini or comparable product. That comes with a built in preamp which you will also need to do any kind of recording using your mic.

I just recently bought a Behringer C-3 mic as well, its working great for me. Good luck with your recording endeavours.

Argh! I knew I'd need yet more boxey things! Will a Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 2in 2out USB audio interface do, I can get one of those quite cheap on Ebay. I got my hopes up when I heard the feedback from people who have the C-3, it's just frustrating not being able to plug it straight in and get going! I'll get there eventually, I hope! Thanks for your help :)

I am afraid not. You will need an audio interface that can accept a balenced input. A balenced input has 3 pins, like on the cable of your microphone.

For example, Lexicon Alpha, MBox 2 mini (if you want to use pro-tools), Yamaha USb mixer, etc. Basically any USB input device that has an XLR (3 pin) connector. Because you have a phantom power supply, you will not need an interface with the phantom power option. This will reduce the cost.

The behringer device you quoted only accepts un-balenced input, i.e. 2 pin.

Got ya, who knew that it would take so much to produce some sound. Looks like another stint of saving is in order. I should have stuck with a Shure, at least I knew where I was with that, but I am a woman and will insist on complicating things!
In the mean time, anyone who has a usb mixer that they wish to donate to a worthy blues making cause, please feel free to give :D

One last question (sorry!) I found an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Interface With Preamps, looks to me like the kind of thing I will need, am I on the right track? I can afford this no prob, please let it be the one!!

Yes, that device is your Yellow Brick Road to recording goodness. :)

That would take care of it, you could then dispense with the Beri, which would have become redundant..

Hurrah! Well, there's one going REALLY cheap so if im lucky I might just win it, fingers crossed. I'll keep the phantom power just incase, will be just my luck to get rid and then find out later on that me or someone else needs it!
Cheers folks for making all this a whole lot clearer

I read that and thought for sure it said, "...dispense with the Behri, which would have become retarded..."

I thought, "Yeah, I guess it would."

Just when I thought I was through with questions I find another! I intend on getting the usb interface after Christmas, but I just so happened to get my hands on an ancient Boss BX-600 6 channel stereo mixer, can I use that in the mean time? Never used it myself so not really sure if it would do the job. what does the forum say *fingers crossed*
