I'm trying to start my own computer based music studio, but I need to know what do I need to do about a mic? Is their a special mic I need to get to connect with my computer or do I need some other devices? Please help if you can

Thanks. . . . Do you know where I can get some good quality kinds at a good price?

DJ, there are tons of good mikes out there.
To narrow your search;

1) What will you be using the microphones for?
2) What is the total budget for mikes, and a mic pre
(or mixer)?

Chris

Well as far as the mic goes, I'm trying to record some vocals. I got a studio program, and I need a good quality mic, instead of my dual head set. For the microphone I'd be willing to pay under 50, I just want a good one and I'm not to familiar with the preamplifier or mixer, so is there one you can suggest that reasonable?

For under $60, the classic recommendation would be a Shure SM57 or
one of the other "Unidyne III" microphones similar to it like the Shure
545. This would be the pricing for a used one BTW.
The most affordable mic pre that would offer "pro" sound would be the
Studio Projects VTB-1 IMO, which is expected to have a price decrease to
around $130, in 6 weeks or so. Website is www.studioprojectsusa.com

One other reasonable way to go would be to get one of the UB series
Behringer mixers, and get something like a Studio Projects B1 (est. $80).
A condenser microphones like the B1 will do better with a cheap mixer's
pre's than a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM57.

At www.pmiaudio.com they may still have some demo Joe Meek MQ1
units on sale ($130?), that include a mic pre, compressor, and EQ.
You'd need to see if your PC is compatible to be safe.

I am doin the same thing, and after much research I went with the studio projects b1 for my mic and a cheaper preamp but I dont have a problem with it. Maybe I just don't know better but it sounds real smooth. I went with a M audio Audio buddy. Alot of the other computer recorders recommended it.

But all I am doing is recording vocals. havent tried my guitar yet and won't for a while still writing tracks in Nuendo. Well I am still real new and havent found everything I need but I feel real good abou8t the sound coming out right now:) Beats my old portasound 424:)

Is there a site you went to, to get that pre amp? If so where?

As far as low budget is concerned, would you recommend me using it, as far as good quality. Cause I don't want nothing that's gonna give me a bad sound, feel me?

Gidge helped me by clueing me into www.bpmmusic.com
They have had free 2 day air shipping included in the price of the
VTB-1. My first two choices would either the VTB-1, or the MQ1
(if you also need compression/EQ). Same mic pre as in the VC3Q BTW.
