Hey guys.

Need your help once again.

I have the rest of my drumset sounding good, kick, tom-toms, cymbols, but the snare just doesn't sound quite right to me.

I don't think it's the microphone, because it works well for other people, but i'm thinking it's the placement or the EQ.

here is a sample.

Please help me out!

Doesnt sound bad. Sounds a little dry maybe. Add a little bit of reverb on it and try either getting a little more of the sound from the overheads or miking the bottom of it.

If thats what your snare sounds like in your room then thats not a bad representation of it. What is it that sounds wrong to you?

it just doesn't sound too good of quality, where the rest of my set, when recorded does.

the snare sounds fine in the room, but when recorded, it looses its fullness, if that is the correct word.

this is really hard to explain, so maybe you guys could post your techniques for record snares?

thanks

It sounds like it's tuned a bit in the "tubby" range.

First, I would check out this site which features Prof. Sound's Drum Tuning Bible:

http://www.cybertoast.tv/drumtuning.htm

for tips on snare selection, tuning, head selection, etc. This is a smart guy who has laid out a pretty useful bit of info there.

Secondly, maybe try another snare? I bought these Slingerland snares recently and love the 4"x14" for it's quick snap and overall nice ring etc. The drum can take low and high tunings well.

The 6.5"x14" Copper is somewhat dry with a nice ring as well. I reach for it when I need some bigger low end whump.

That 4" though has proven to be a very nice addition around here. Very versatile.

Look up their eBay auctions and see what their best deal is. Then, email them and offer them that price and see if they will take it. *hint hint they did for me*

Yah but what is it your looking for? Big, Tight, Snappy, Resonant, Dry, Wet, Tubby, Punchy?

Right now it does sound big and tubby, but it doesnt sound bad (at least if thats what your looking for).

If anything just try tunning it up a bit. Sounds a bit loose. The drum tuning bible should definately help.

i'm trying to get more of a massive sound out of it, somewhere between Godsmacks and Aerosmiths
