Has anyone out there noticed a difference between using a $20 mic cable and using a $50 cable(gold this and that etc...)...even if the difference is minimal

i'm just wondering cuz i bought something from a music store and they only do exchanges and was wondering if a $50 mic cable (planet wave i think is the brand) would be worth the upgrade

Teach,

I've never used the Planet Wave brand. Never heard of it. BUT, I have noticed a definite difference in Mogami or Canare cable versus lower priced brands like ProCo, Hosa or Whirlwind. Mogami and Canare clean up the noise and I hear a fuller signal with them. My guess is the same for the higher priced brand you're looking at.

thanks...thats exactly what i wanted to hear...i'ma ask if they have mogami or canare first i guess before i get the planet wave unless someone else heard of them and they are in the same class? I'm guessing better cables or more beneficial to a dynamic then a condenser cuz of the low output?
that would be even better cuz my primary vox mic is a dynamic...

In my situation I noticed significantly less hiss when I used (B.l.u.e.) cables. I was very very happy.

Planet Waves products are made by D'Addario. They are way way overpriced. As others said, check out canare, mogami etc. I have a bunch of whirlwind cables that work fine as well, but they don't wrap up easy which is annoying.

You should check out companies that deal in sound and lighting rather than a music store for certain types of cabling. Look in the yellow pages.

did you read my post? the store i bought cables from doesn't give refunds JUST EXCHANGES, and i saw an expensive mic cable so i wondered if its worth it...are they at least as good as the mogamie etc. even though they are over priced...i think i have whirlwind mic cable now

I admit I missed the 'exchange' part. My sincere apologies for answering your post incorrectly.

Teacher,

Monster is great cable also. But, it's way overpriced. I have found Monster to be just as good, but no better than Mogami or Canare.... but way more $$. It's rare to see Mogami or Canare in local shops. Most of the time I order Mogami from Full Compass and Canare from www.markertek.com

Your store may, however, stock Monster. Given the choice between Planet Wave/D'Addario cable and Monster, I'd go with Monster even though they are overpriced. Just food for thought.

thanks for your replies...

next time i buy from that store i'ma MAKE sure i need the cables instead of assuming...

Personally, I love Planet Waves cables. I have several 25' mic cables and I love them. I replaced every cable in my guitar rig with Planet Waves and could definately tell a difference.

I've used Monster cable. But, in my opinion, Planet Waves are better constructed than Monster. Planet Waves has double-molding on the plugs for strain-relief. Monster has the little plastic sheath underneath the housing with little-to-no strain relief. I'm no cable expert, but I would definately go with PW over Monster.

i use planet waves cables, i love them... you can hear a large difference vs cheap cables..

I build my own cables, and I notice a huge difference between them and anyother cable I have ever used. I will put them up against anything out there. And the cost total is about $7.00 for a 25 foot xlr. And that is just for the connectors. Its great being an electrician.

got the planet wave cables...the noise floor dropped about -6 db when the mic was connected vs. my older hot lines mic cables

Heh, that's cool.

I guess you now have empirical evidence for when someone asks: "Are expensive cables really better than cheap cables?"

Teacher,

I'm glad you found this out. Noise, or the lack of it, was the most significant difference that I noticed with higher quality cable about 3 years ago. It was earth-shattering. In fact, my keyboards sounded like totally different instruments. Like night and day. I also noticed a more full signal. It's a wonder what the signal really sounds like once you take away all that pesky noise.
