ok i think i've found a placement of this mic i'm satisfied with. about half a foot from the grill right in the center. it's not great but it's acceptable i suppose.
i use a TUBE MP by ART as a preamp and my amp is a Line 6 Spider II 112. if i put this mic against the grill the tone is ruined, there's too much ugly bass/hum. anyone else have this experience?

I always close mic with the 609. What part of the speaker is the mic in front of? That makes a difference. Closer to the middle accents the treble more. Hum comes from the amp, and has nothing to do with the microphone.

i put it right in the middle of the speaker, maybe "hum" isnt the right word for the sound i am trying to describe. it is kind of like a "roomy" sound, it makes the tone kind of muddy, i wonder if the room has anything to do with it. my room has hardwood floor.

I would atleast partially attribute your sound quality problem to your preamp.

You also might need to re-EQ your amp for recording. What sounds good to you may not sound so good to your mic, if you know what I mean.

i think you have a point there.. i am having suspicions with the TUBE MP

That mic is as friendly as they get. You should be able to put it just about anywhere and get a good sound. The rst of your chain is the problem, unless you've got a bad 609

I've been running my 609 through my aphex 107 preamp, flat eq on the board with great results. Bypass that noise preamp and go direct. You should heard a difference.

First, get the amp up off the floor. Put it on a table or a high stool. Tilt it slightly upwards.

If you're getting too much bass, then turn the bass down on the amp or switch pickups or both.

Stick the mic off-center. Not directly on the center of the speaker cone -- towards it, but just outside of it if you know what I mean. Play around with it a little.

Yup, chessrock hit the nail on the head. Get that damn thing off of the floor! I'm really surprised that nobody said this earlier. This is a common problem and getting the speaker a few feet off of the floor fixes that annoying bass boom 90% of the time. Also, if you are using a guitar with a floating tremelo it is a good idea to stick a peice of foam under the trem springs on the underside of the guitar. Those tremelos casue all kinds of ring and hum if not dampened properly. As always, YMMV.

will putting the amp on a bed with mattresses and blankets worsen or improve the sound as opposed to leaving it on the floor?
