Well actually first step to take is to work on tuning and then mic placement.

What are you using for O/H's.
I like to get as much of the kit out of my O/H as I can. Then add tom mics last.

im talking mics, buddy, mics....

a lot of the bands i record use the kit i have here...and i have a drum teacher come and tune it (because i'm miserable at it) and it sounds great...

as i said...the drums dont sound terrible...im just not in love with them....

If the drums are tuned right, and the room is a good room, and the mics are positioned correctly, go with condensors - especially if you are going after a modern tom sound (or sample replace if you really want to be "modern")

Hey, just making sure. 99% of bad drum sounds are because of improper tuning. Not a bad thing to learn. A general rule of thumb for tuning toms is in 4ths.

Some other mics I've personally used on toms include:
Senn. MD421
Shure Beta98 (I've probably seen those used more than anything else in live apps.)
EV N/D 468 (maybe not that exact model but similar).

I liked the EVs a lot. I prefer to use something small like the EVs or Beta98s. I find it's too difficult to get something as large as a MD421 to sit right.

it's just something i can never get the hang of

we've got a really nice c and c custom kit sitting here...and i try and try...i know the 4ths thing...and it never sounds the way i want it to sound, and the way i know it can sound...

this guy is in and out in no time...and they sound the way i envision drums should sound

ATM 25's sound great on toms, not the little ones so much, for those I put a CAD M179 between 'em in fig8

how little do you mean??
the majority of toms i am working with are between 13-18"

127 Riot Studio

Some of the best sounding tom mic's ever with out thinking twice are the Yamaha mz 204 be or the mz 205 be depending on the size of the tom.

They are very hard to find

i bought the DrumDial tuner.

its amazing. really it gives me a perfect drum sound. they are powerful, but no ring! hit and die quick!

i use 57's and i'm falling in love with my kit now!

i'm opposite of whoever posted up there, i try to get the LEAST out of my overheads, because my room sucks and the OH's pick that up more than any dynamic mic on the set.

really, i love that tuner thing, it really helped me get that sound that i wanted but couldnt get with my ears!

no i am not spamming for DrumDial, i just love the product.

but i guess next up would be 421's.. bigger, harder to squeeze into tight spots.

hey ork, want to sell those shitty 57's??

;)

hey hey hey.

im 16!

and i have a 7 piece kit!

i just need really like one more

but i'd like to have another so i dont have to take one off the drums to put onto the guitar amp..

so thats two more.

but i want a 421 too, so i can put that on either snare or guitar, and move a 57 onto the hats...

grr for not having enough mics!

the way i look at it, if i have 18/14 channels of i/o, why not use as many as i can! :)
my drums take up 8 right now, theres still 10 channels left! i never record all instruments at the same time, so i can technically use all 18 channels on drums, and then swap my plugs and crap!

semi-joking, but i do like to mic everything up so i can elimate as much 'room' sound as i can.

if i would have stuck with 4 mics, i could have used the money i spent on additional mics for room treatment.... whatever.

get an atm 25 if it is for rock...most c&c kits are then that mic holds its own for lower fqs then the 57...but i too use the 57 on my high tom and its great

I've never had a problem with a 57 on any tom except the floor tom. If you're getting a poor sound out of a 57 on rack toms and your kit is 'professionally' tuned... you should look into your placement technique and the acoustic properties of your room.

If the drums sound good but you're not 'in love with them' then you should probably play around with EQ'ing and effects first. I don't know many people who fall in love with a raw drum sound.

I love a good raw drum sound! It's all about tuning, mic choice, and mic placement for me.

Try 421's on your toms if you can. A little more info would be helpful - what style are you playing? How do you want the drums to sound? What do they sound like at the moment - in the room/recorded?
As far as tuning goes, you generally need more ring than you think you do, because when you mic from the top head you lose a lot when you record - maybe that's your problem if you've got them tuned up dead...

Just my $0.02
