Hello all,
Though I have some experience recording drums (mainly my own small set in my home studio), the time has come for me to attempt to record the kit of the drummer in my band. I've never even attempted to tackle a set of this magnitude (he has two snare drums!), and he's being pretty uncooperative in terms of my ideas (for instance, he has this absolutely huge, boomy bass drum which sounds great live, but was proving impossible to record, and he was adamantly against the idea of removing the front head so that I could put a mic closer to the beater [I would have tried micing the other side, but he has this absolutely god-awful pedal that utilizes rubber tension bands that squeak [you don't notice it as much until you stick a microphone near it] that he insists on using)...so, I'm thinking of trying different techniques that will require little to no close micing whatsoever.
With this in mind, has anyone ever attempted recording a drum set with just 3 microphones? I was thinking of trying an arrangement with two matched overhead condensers on either side (for stereo) and something in front of the set as well (probably a condenser as well). I'm really looking to capture the sound of the kit without jamming mics into every crevice, or even most, for that matter. Money isn't TOO MUCH of an object (well, let's not delve into U-87s or anything)...any recommendations as to microphone models, placement, where I can even get matched microphones for such a purpose, cost, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
