Nilbog

hello
Okay, this is one for all you MD8 users out there. What if I want to use a mic which requires phatom power, and a Mic whcih does NOT require phantom power on channels 1 and 2? I see two possible solutions:
1. buy a seperate mic amp an dont use the MD8's.
2. PLug the non-phatom mics into the unbalanced inputs.
neither of these two answers I like. I'm hoping there's some easy solution like some secret function that allows you to only put phantom power on 1 mic.
thanks.

What kind of mics are they?

Is the non-phantom mic dynamic? Probably is, thinks I.

If so, it shouldn't be affected adversely by switching on the p-power. But don't do it on my recommendation!!!! Make sure first. I know I do it...

Yo Nilbog:]

I have run my phantom powered mic through a mic pre-amp [which has its own phantom power supply] as well as through the MD-8 in ANY CHANNEL USING THE PHANTOM POWER SWITCH on the back of the MD-8.

Don't know why you couldn't use any of the other channels for your NON-PHANTOM POWERED mic and use the pres on the MD-8???

I think you need to experiment a bit. I usually do vocals LAST AND I USUALLY save the XLR inputs for the vocals. All the rest goes through the mic pre or directly into the MD-8's pres.

I also have learned to use the group recording settings on the MD-8 and route the drum track to two tracks; thus, I get a nice round stereo drum track to mix in with the total recording.

Experiment is the essence of discovery, or something like that.

So putting a dynamic mic on a powered channel won't hurt it?!? I'm using a Sennhesier e835, and I HAVE accidently turned on the phantom power with it plugged in for a few seconds. What happends to non-dynamic microphone when phantom power is applied?

Green Hornet: How do you use phantom power on ANY channel? I thought it was just the XLR's...

I'm pretty sure that one can use dynamic mics with phantom on, a: because I've done and b: because if you couldn't it would mean that with the majority of set-ups, youd never be able to record using both types at once! That don't sound right. Mixers just apply phantom power to all the XLR ins and you just plug away (but don't plug-in/remove anything when the powers on!!!).

now ive got confused. do you a)turn on phantom power and then plug in the mic or b) plug in mic then turn on the phantom power?

Yo Nilbog:

You know I may be wrong; I've used my mic on all 8 channels; however, since I usually run it through the ART pre-amp, which has its own phantom power source, I seldom turn on the phantom power on the back of the MD-8.

I'm going to try my mic tonight straight through an MD-8 input, say channel 5 direct.

Also, you can try the GROUP SELECTION INPUT routing via the busses; then you can use the XLR plug and the phantom power and route your signal to any other track or more than one track and RECORD IT. I've just learned how to buss around with my unit. Will let you know what happens in a day or two.

You plug in then turn on power...to everything. Never turn power on till all plugs and cords are in. Always turn off power before taking plugs and cords out. Power is the last thing on and the first thing off.

Yo Yo Yo:

EARS is abosolutely right; PLUG IN AND SWITCH ON WHAT IS NEEDED BEFORE TURNING ON THE POWER; POWER OFF FIRST WHEN DONE WORKING.

AFTER THAT, A COORS ORIGINAL WILL SUFFICE.
