I'm just home for the summer and recording some stuff for fun. I've got a Rode NT1, a 57 and a 58 available right now. I was thinking 58 on kick, 57 on snare and NT1 as an overhead (they maybe a mono->stereo plugin?). I guess the other option would be to put the NT1 on the kick (damage?) and the Shures overhead since they are basically the same mic.
What is the possibility of micing the whole kit and then using eq and gating to get enough isolation to trigger samples? Or should I just give up and use loops. :)

Anyone got any creative ideas?

Try both and use what sounds best... Also, don't be affraid to screw the ball of your sm58. Without the ball it is really close to the 57.

If you use the stereo overhead, you can also try using the NT1 as a 'room mic', maybe pointing to what you lack in the overheads.

Definitely do the 57 and 58 on the kick and snare (take the ball off the 58)....nt1 overhead, about a foot directly above your head but facing out over the kit slightly downward.....experiment ALOT with mic positioning, as a slight move makes alot of difference....if you can get it right, its definitely worth it.....

Suggestion

well; after my experience the best thing to do if you are standing without any money but still wanting to get things done then use a regular computer mic. That´s right...the one you got with your computer. You can always mix it afterwards to get the tone right if you have Goldwave, cubase, acid pro or something simular. The grass is not always greener on the other side :)
