Hey, i have been going direct into my sound card with a zoom pedal. I want to get a richer sound so I assume the best thing to do would be to mic my amp.
I was thinking about geting a radio chack mic and just using that for now. I cant really afford to buy a mic like an sm 57 because i'll need a mic pre to get into my sound card, (i think). Which is too much. If i get the radio shack mic will i end up with a worse sound then going direct? Should i just wait until i can afford the sm 57 and the mic pre? Thanks

Unless you make your own, you'll probably need several adaptors. You'll need an xlr female to 1/4" female, and then a 1/4" male to 1/8" male.

Make sure pin 2 on the xlr is wired to the tip connection of the 1/4 plug. Connect pin 1 and 3 of the xlr to the shield of the 1/4" plug. This will convert the mic to "unbalanced operation" - just like me!!

If you make your own cable, use 12' or less, and connect the xlr at one end and the 1/8" plug at the other end. With unbalanced mics, longer cables will start to roll off highs and there is a likelyhood of hum being induced into the cable as the cable length is increased.

They do make "XLR to 1/4" cables, so I don't think you'll have to make your own. Then buy a "1/4 to 1/8" adaptor and you should be set, (but definitly look into a mic pre in the near future).

tekker, ya i saw one at radio shack, i think i'll do that. Thanks.
