Here is the deal let me tell you what equip I have and maybe someone out there can get me an answer.

Sm57
akg instrument mic
MXL V67G Condenser mic
Metal Zone mT2 dist pedal
Crate Half stack (model Unkown)
Ibenez Road gear II guitar (tuning to C#)

Im trying to get a balls ass heavy guitar tone IE:Slipknot, System of a Down, Mudvayne style crunch and all that happens when i mic it up it sounds far back and too scratchy. Hope someone can help me out thanx.

Try this and tell me what it sound like:

Plug the guitar straight into the amp, Don't use the Metal Zone, set the amp's eq knobs all at about 6, set the amp's drive/distortion to about 3/4, turn the output up to a moderate volume, put the 57 about 1 inch from the grill of the cab about halfway between the centre and the edge of one of the speaker cones, put the V67 about 5 ft back.

Forget about how you think it sounds when you first hear it, try recording it like that and listen to it afterwards, is it closer to what you were looking for?

Although I generally don't like solid state Crate amps, they do have a semi decent amp distortion for heavy stuff, just dont take out too much mids or add too much bass. I really hate their clean tones and the Metal Zone pedal has way too much bass and treble boost available in my opinion, therefore combining the two isn't a good idea if you're looking for a tone that will record well.

The metal zone pedal is scratchy (imo) actually.
Turn the highs down a bit and put the mic about 3cm from the grille.
I use a large diaghragm (AKGD112, C4000B) mic if I want a bigger sound and a small diaphragm (SM57) if I want a thinner sound.
Some tips:
1. You need a lot less bass for the guitar to record then you think.
2. These sounds you mentioned are havily dpending on the bass without the bass they sound midrangey and thin.

I GOT THE METAL PETAL2. THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT, BUT STARTED TO RECORD AND GOT TO REALLY LISTENING TO IT. IT'S SOO GOD DAMN NOISY.LOOKING FOR ANOTHER PETAL GOT ANY IDEAS.

Yeah that makes sense w/ yhe pedal ill have to try it w/ out.
Although it does sound bad ass when I use it Live. Thanx

"if" you're a bit "cranked" place the sm57 3/4 of the way from center of the cone, "touching" the grille, and turn the gain on the 57 down enough to eat most of the noise....place your condenser mic in the middle of the speakers 2-3' away--again, turn the gain down on the condenser path to eat most of the noise...don't forget that you can also adjust any gain stages after your mics--at the sound-board, your ADCs or whatever device is doing the recording...many "balls ass heavy guitar" tones these days are dramatically boosting the low end while in standard tuning....if you don't have the technology to "quietly" dramatically boost the low end for standard tuning, try tuning to CGCGCD.

Good point toyL I forgot that most of those bands are all tuned down a few steps (probably to C or C#). And for example Korn uses 7 string guitars etc.
And most of them use 5 string basses.
