Hi everyone,

Santa recently left a Fostex MR-8 under the tree and I have been playing with my new toy since.

I have recorded a couple of songs by Mark Knopfler (vocals and keyboard). The keyboard sounds okay, but the vocals are too muffled. The mic that I am using is a mic I bought a long time ago for karaoke. I don't know the brand name, but it does say it's a dynamic mic (whatever that means).

Here's my question, can someone please suggest a good mic to use? Please keep in mind Knopfler's vocal style (ie. tends to be soft and sings in the lower ranges).

Also, does a pre-amp or effects processor help make the vocals sound more clearer and cleaner?

Thanks in advance.

Last month's Recording mag covered his most recent session and went over his gear. Can't remember what they used though.

I remember reading an article a little while ago in a guitar player magazine saying that he uses either a 57 or a Neumann KLM model....but for a lower range vocal...Just find a nice Large diaphragm mic that sounds good with your voice, and a tube pre. You will be able to dial up the Knopfler sound...
