I have a mic (duh). I have a sound card. I have a 4 track. Do I need to buy a mic pre amp or a mixer to go to the sound card with or can I go from the mic to the 4 track to the sound card. The sound card has 1/8" inputs. I'm unsure of the outs on the 4 track (it's a Tascam 424, I think - haven't seen it in a while - let a friend hold it, blah blah blah). Please help me. Thanks

I'm sure your four track has line level outputs on it. RCA's maybe? just get a cable 2-RCA mono's to 1/8" stereo and record away.

Hi Ashanti,

Yeah Emeric's right. Lots of cards don't have preamps built-in. So you need some kind of signal boost for your mic. Any small mixer, even a simple transistor pre-amp from one of the kitset places will do. If your 4-track can do it, then that should be plenty of oomph for a good input to your card.
