MIC THE AMPS?

I've built a soundproof room for rehearsing with my band. Should I be micing the amps and the drums; should I be using some kind of PA-system just for rehearsing?

You certainly don't need to mic drums cos they'll be plenty loud. If your amps can go loud enough to match the drums then you won't need to mic those either. However you will need a PA to run vocals... there's no other way around it.

If you are using a PA anyway (vocals) micing amps is nice because you can mix the sounds on your mixing console rather than fooling with amp volumes. Depending on how big your room is, you don't really need to mic the drums (they're too loud anyway). If you get into bigger situations start with kick and snare mics. The bigger the venue the more drum mics are needed. My drummer uses 7 mics, but we play a lot of different places.

For practicing, nothing is miked but the vocals. We use monitors only, so everyone can hear the vocals. The drums/instruments will not be as dynamic sounding as if they were miked. As long as everyone can hear each other over the drums it should be sufficient. Partitions/ plexi sheilds are good for keeping the drums volume in check.
Rock on !

My band started running the kick thru the PA at rehearsal (it gets a little loud in there with 2 Rectos and an SVT!) and we noticed that everyone is locking in with the drums a lot better now. If you feel you need to run yer amp really loud at rehearsal to get "that tone" try turning it towards the wall (unless it's open back) and micing it. Yer band mates will appreciate.
