Can anyone tell me what mic splitters are and why they are used? Thanks.

Basically anytime you need to send a signal from a single mic to a couple different locations, eg. At a live show the stage mics need to go to the main Front Of House console, the Onstage Monitor console and maybe even a recording truck, you dont want the different consoles to affect the signal that the others are getting but at the same time you dont want to have to use 3 seperate mics on each instrument, so you just split the mic signal and give each engineer his own individual feed.

I would like to build a couple of these with "8 in-16 out" are there any schematics out there? Is there something made like this? I have only seen 1-2 &1-3 splitters.

Mic Splitter Adapters?

Do these have to be units like the ones made by Whirlwind, or can you just use a "Y" adapter to split the signal to two places. I am trying to set up a in-ear monitor mix when my band plays. Thanks.

There are a few problems withY cables. First, it affects the output impedence which will alter the frequency reponse of what's coming out of the mic. Then there's problems with electrical isolation if you are conected to different pieces of equipment (one side to a front of house mixer and a split going to a recorder) you can set up a ground loop that won't go away. A mic splitter built around a good transformer can help with those situations. Jensen trannies can be a little pricey, around $100 a throw.

There's a technique called multing when using a patchbay that might work for you. You might try doing a search on "mult".

Splitter recommendation

OK, so I need a splitter, several actually. I want to set up an in-ear monitor mix from the band's mixer to my mixer. Which splitter should I get? Price is important, but so is quality. I don't want to get one that doesn't really do the job like it should. Remember, this is for in-ear monitoring. Not that important sound-wise, but should do the job. Thanks.

Try Whirlwind, pretty cheap.

I built one once, then I lost it somewhere...LEver let your wife pack studio equip when you move!
The rack Mounted ones can cost upwards of $400 or more..

Happy Hunting.

Or just DIY.

just solder 2 connectors to each other..
remember to use balanced lines (XLR, hot/cold/ground)
Better to use transformers, but the direct-parallel-connector will do the job for you.

Y-split cables will NOT do the job 'coz of different type of connections inside the TRS

Thanks for finding that one for me SoMm, but now roman has thrown another one at me. What? How? Where? Why? the transformers on the DYI
