The C1000 is a shitty, shitty mic at any cost.
However...
You have to remember the reviews at HC--or anywhere--are a product of user experience and frame of reference. Logic dictates that when you read reviews by people with budget pocketbooks buying and reviewing budget gear you are wandering into a budget arena and all opinions are relative to that arena. An $80 Behringer mixer and an equally inexpensive mic, for example, are wonderful things to a beginner. Many are making their first recordings! So the enthusiastic 9s and 10s are understandable. It would be unusual for experienced recordists to be buying and reviewing Behringer mic pres and mics.
On the other hand, if you see 5 reviews of the U195 you can be reasonably sure the users, although maybe not pros, do have some experience and a relative frame of reference--they've probably either owned or used cheaper gear and may have even used and/or owned higher end gear. Of course, if it's their first "high end" mic they may be overly enthusiastic as well, or they may be overly critical if it does not produce the "magic" their dreams had promised--but their opinions are still relative to that arena. The difference is, a mic earning a 10.0 average rating in the budget arena is unlikely the equal of a mic earning only an 8.0 average in a higher end arena. Of course, we all understand that--it's all relative.
And in the end...it's still all just opinion.
