I'm a recording newbie and need advice on mics for my Laney combo bass amp and Rivera 55W guitar amp. Currently I have a SM57 and a condenser KSM27. I just acquired a Motu Ultralite interface so am anxious to start recording. Is there another mic in the 57's price range that will work well specifically for recording bass, but also bring smthng to the table for elec. guitar? I'm thinking for both amps to record w/ 2 mics - the 57 and smthng else. I only want to buy one more mic to use for both amps. My Laney has Direct Inject option but I can't get a good sound. I'm new to recording and have small home setup w/ basic software - Motu's AudioDesk and CueMix for mixing - so I suck at EQ'ing/mixing.

I've received recommendations for a ribbon mic (specifically the Cascade Fat Head) and the Beyerdynamic M88. The M88 is too expensive so that's out. Just wondering what recommendations you have to complement the SM57 (use two mics) or take its place and only use one.
