If you just need one preamp the the ART Tube MP is a popular choice for around $110 US.

The Mackie 1202vlz mixer gives you 4 good solid state preamps for about $375. The Mackies are also a real flexible tool to have. I have the 1402vlz and use it for all kind of things.

The main thing an outboard preamp will do is boost the signal. Most, if not all of these recorders clip way to easy and it's hard to give them a real strong signal. A decent outboard preamp will solve that problem.

I agree with the Art Tube MP. I have since purchased better preamps - but an MP was my first and it did a good job for me.

Don't forget the Presonus Blue Tube pre-amp
2 channels for $150, Supposed to be a step(slight?)
up from the Art Tube MP
