ok, i have a studio pr. b1, and i basically was just wondering how critical a preamp actually is, i just use a carvin mixer that already has phantom power, but i notice just about everyone uses a preamp for their mics and i have never done that and what exactly can you do with a preamp, is it so you can get the exact sound that you want? just wondering...thanks!

what i mean is an external preamp, i know the carvin has one on the channels, but like an external purchase.

A Grace 101 would definitely be a lot better than the mic pre in your Carvin mixer. An FMR RNP would be as well. If you don't have the money then don't worry about it. You should be able to make fine recordings with what you've got. I have a bud who has made several fine recordings with a little Behringer mixer and a Rode NT1.
