Have VS-1880, and am using Shure KSM-32 Mic. Vocals sound a little weak. Am starting to look at Pre-Amps, but not really sure what to go with. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Can only afford $500-$600, but would naturally like to spend less. Have looked a little at Presonus and DBX. Also would it be best to get on with digital outs or are my built in A/D converters ok. Thanks for any and as much info as you can give.

I have heard the DBX is good. For under $500 the Midiman audio buddy is good and can take 2 mics. It costs about $80.

Studio Projects has a new one out that has both a tube and solid state. The tube can be blended with the solid state for different effect. It sells for about $180 I think. I haven't heard it but might be worth lookin into.

I have a couple of Presonus MP-20s, and I like them - they're OK; I also have two HHB Radius-40s, which are much nicer but are more $$. The Roland pres really aren't all that good, and if you're only going for one, I would get the Radius-40 (~$650 from Full Compass). The Radius-40 features a pre/compressor/gate/equaliser, is all tube, and is ideal for voice.

Hope this helps -
