Hi,

do you have to have a mic pre to make a good vocal recording? If yes what are some good preamps that will not kill me in the bank? If you dont really need one what is the best way to get a recording without one? can i just buy a mixer and run through that instead? I am new to all of this any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

If it's just for an informal demo, I've gotten reasonable results
with a Behringer mixer (gasp!), however, that acapella group was
GOOD, and may be shooting eventually for World Championship
competititions! They're on the level of good legit "Broadway" singers if that gives you a better idea where they're at.

Having said that, yes for those of us that are less advanced,
a pretty good pre (or better) makes more of a difference.
So what's your total budget, and what kind of microphones
are you planning to use?

Chris
