Flypaper for freaks
Hi all,

I am looking for a setup that will record trumpet (and brass), vocals, sax, and guitars well. For trumpet I am thinking of a Royer Labs R-121. Is this a great choice? For vocals, etc, I am thinking about a Neumann TLM 193.

As I would like a great preamp for these both; and I was thinking the Great River mp-1nv (given that I will never be recording both simultaneously).

Does this sound good?

To recap:
- Royer Labs R-121 for trumpet, horns, etc.
- Neumann TLM 193 for vocals, guitars
- Great River mp-1nv preamp for both

I already have a Grace 101, and an AKG 535eb.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

with those mics and that pre-amp you should have no trouble getting great sounds. my question to myself would be should i look into better converters?
you could get the great river and a mytek adc and the tlm. or get both mics, the mytek and an mp1nv.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a Lucid ADA 2408. Would that suffice?

The chain I am thinking would run

mic -> preamp -> FMR RNC compressor -> Lucid ADA 2408

Does this sound good?

Thanks again,

Sounds excellent. But even though the Royer 121 is an excellent mic and one of my favorite mics for horns i dont really think its the mic you need right now. I own the TLM193 and the Royer 122 (the phantom powered one) and i love them both, but i also have a good base of mics to support them. I would stick with the TLM193 becuase that is a beautiful mic and you will find alot of uses for it. But i would replace the Royer with a larger variety of different colored mics. The Royers main uses are going to be for trumpet and maybe distortion guitar if your going to do it. It sometimes works on everything else, but it also sometimes sucks on everything else.

Heres some more options.

TLM 193

Sennheiser MD441 / Great on trumpet and alot of other things. Its gonna fill in anything the Royers going to be good at.

MXL 603/Neumann KM184/AKG C451 etc / Put a good small diaphragm in there or a pair if you can.

Beyer Ribbon - Theres a few of these that you can get on ebay that will also be great for the trumpet and other things that the Royer would be good for.

Sennheiser MD421 - If you buy more and cant quite snag the MD441, this is a good alternative.

Those are just a few options you could do. But basically the point is to try and grab a variety of different colored mics for the same price so you have a selection and buy stuff that are a little more fitting to the other things you listed.

The preamp should be great if you dont need more channels.

You could breakdown the TLM193 with other mics for vocals for more variety and possibly get a few more that could also work with others but if you want a good dedicated vocal mic the TLM193 is a great choice. The TLM193 can be used on alot of other things also but its not extremely versatile.

Oh and if you do decide to stick with the Royer id recommend saving up to get the 122 even though you are getting a good preamp. Its much easier to deal with the gain on that thing and you dont have to worry about phantom power blowing the mic up because its actually being powered by it. Last thing you want is a $1200 mic blowd up.

Also consider the AEA Ribbon. Ive heard alot of good things about those too if your looking for more of a classic ribbon sound.
