Hi all...I'm a newbie here, so be patient.

I just got a SM58 to try out some home recording. I still need to get a preamp that I can run into my soundcard (SoundBlaster),
but I don't know a thing about any of it. The only thing I've done so far is run it through my guitar amp, which sounds awful. Any advice would be great!
thanks.

All mic preamps will have line level outputs. Your soundblaster (like almost every soundcard on the planet) as line level inputs. Therefore, you can connect any mic pre to any soundcard as long as you've got the right cable, which isn't hard to find.

The audio buddy from m-Audio is a dual mic pre for like $70 that gets decent reviews. There are lots of single channel preamps in the $100 range that are doable. Then of course there are pro preamps that run into the many thousands of dollars.

Your soundblaster also has a built in microphone preamp. It's not going to sound great, and isn't designed for anything but little computer electret mics.....but it can be used until you get the cash for a decent pre.

As Slack said, you can use the mic input on your SoundBlaster. This is what I've been doing until very recently, with an SM58 no less. The results were usable and with a fair amount of tweaking I was able to achieve, what I perceive as, decent results, YMMV. If you wanna hear what I'm talking about, click here.
