I see deaf people
Im going to buy a better pre amp than my DMP 2 but im still on a budget, i dont record much vocals either

What would you guys pick out of a focusrite isa one, golden age pre 73mkII, or a meekbox vc-6q??

Would there be others in this $300-400 range i should think about

Thanks for any info :)

If you want "colour", there has been a lot of interest in and good reviews of the Warm Audio WA12 single channel preamp. Price is about $450, but might be a contender.

(I have to confess that I hate it when people make equipment suggestions that fall just above my budget :D But there it is.)

Yeah looking at that and the grace as well, might just be above budget

If you are truely on a budget ...get a DBX 286A.I just bought me another to have a pair and used one already for vocals straight to my 2488 NEO with SUPERB results....so thats when I bought the other to have a pair for 2 extra mic pres. That would give me 2 extra mic. inputs for my NEO, which gives me a total of 6 for drums when needed. So I could use the DBX's for like the more critical things instead of straight to the NEO.......my 2 cents:eatpopcorn:

Oh yeah sorry i didnt see your "budget" range but,the DBX 286A are around $150 used and are worth much much more in my opinion.......

Interesting, they went under my radar and would mean a pair rather than a solo

I've never used the Meekbox and only have had the occasional encounter with the Focusrite, but I own a GA pre-73 and it's awesome for the money! You can really be flexible in your choices, and add color as you please--from an absolutely clear input to tons of color. Plus it's got 80 db that are completely clean so it's nice if you have to run any heavier mics. :) I'd definitely recommend it!

Hey KC if I were you I would go for any one of the meekbox vc-6q, GA pre-73 or the new Warm Audio WA12.
The Meek having a lot more flexibility than the others would move me in that direction. ;)

This is the one i was going to buy in the first place, as dialing in colour would be great on my guitar i reckon, the DMP 2 are just a bit sterile for guitars and bass imo..l.the focusrite is always one ive thought off, just because of the used market...i can pick up one for $350, but no ones mentioning it

Thanks Henry, i was going to pm you....as Im mainly in it just for the pre amp would you say the meekbox could hold its own if it wasnt for the extra components? Are they that usable? I also notice there are a couple of vc6 models, is their any real differences?

Thanks guys

I do adore the focusrite ISA pre's; super clean, super crisp, big full sound without being sterile. Then again, as everyone else as said, if you want something more "coloured" the GAP and Warm Audio would be the way to go, but if you just want something super clean and super functional the ISA one is absolutely incredible. I'm waiting for some of the ISA Two's to hit the second hand market ;)

just my 2 pence :)

This is what I thought...I think Im leaning towards the Golden Age...I may buy a ISA One later as an addition...or get a Two when I have room for another rack...man so much for the cash though, looks great

yeah though ISA Ones are just such a good price that Im going to pick one up at some point...

I just did a search (doh) and theres a few threads on it with basically the same pre's being mentioned

I notice that someone said the Golden age is a little noisy on high gain but I think that was the MK1, I think this was addressed in a newer version

Just keep in mind that the golden age and the warm audio are just clone preamps. The Warm audio is based on the classic API 312 mic amp module and the Golden age is very similar to the classical preamp section of the Neve 1073 pre/eq module and Zen Audio offers an upgrade mod to it but is VERY good right out of the box.

Yeah I knew they were clones, and pretty good considering the price, I mean amazingly good considering the price

what would push you towards the meek box though? just the extra components?

Just a big meek sound fan boy.
Did you read THIS thread?

The Neve 1073 sound (golden age) is what you would hear on a lot more songs than any other though.
