Mic Positioning

I'm about to buy the Sennheiser e609 for my guitar cab. The pictures i've seen for the mic all look like the user was incorporating a boom stand to position it properly. But a while ago, I thought I've seen photo's where the mic was draped over the amp, just hanging in front of the speaker.

Do I need a boom stand with this, or can I just drape it?

Also, where is a good spot for the mic to be pointing at..... just a little off from the center of the speaker?

i get a great sound out of my 609 by just draping it across the front of the amp. that's one less stand i have to deal with too. i hang it by the mic cable, and often use the amp's handle (assuming a combo amp) to secure the mic into place. a piece of gaffer tape does nicely too.

the "best" place for the mic is whereever it gives you the best sound (or more accurately, were you get the sound that you're looking for). you'll have to move it around and see.

cheers,
wade

Since the 609 is a side address mic, you won't lose any top end by hanging the mic over the cabinet, so you're good to go.

Thanks for the tips bud. I was hoping that I didn't have to purchase a stand, as the only added benefit with the stand would be the ability to angle the mic from the cab.... which I really don't know how much of a difference that would make anyways.

Obviously, I want to place the mic at where ever I get the best sound, however, when I go to put this mic into use, it's going to be at an upcoming show, and I was hoping someone could give me a good place to start.... you know.... so I'm not standing there for two hours screwing around with mic positioning hahahhaha.

I've heard some people put theirs a bit off-center of the cone, so I guess I could start there.

This will be the first time I've ever miced an amp (yeah... I'm WAY behind here), so.... With a 100 watt solid state amp, and a presonus blue tube pre amp for the mic, would I be able to set the pre at maybe 50-75% gain, and volume on the amp at about 10 o'clock?

I think I have some good basics in mind from what I've read on here, just looking for any more opinions to help save me some time during set up. ;)

Play the amp where it sounds good and set the pre accordingly

When I get lazy or out of stands I drape it over the amp and it always sounds fine.

What he said.

As far as the e609 goes, I really like mine for my amps, and in a live context I also run the cable through the handle of my amp, and just let the mic drape over and hang in front of the amp. The only reason I like having a tiny little table-top mic stand for recording is so that I can position the mic more accurately - its just easier that repositiong, readjusting the cable, and reanchoring so that the mic doesn't move. So, yes, there is more to having a stand than just mic angle, but you can get by without it easily.

I believe you said you would be crankin this amp pretty damn loud when recording it... I doubt you will need even the gain on the preamp you are talking about. Even when I am playing my amp at tolerable levels for a mid-size bedroom, the e609 records a nice sound and a decent level, without a TON of gain. It is designed to handle rather high SPLs as well, so don't worry about harming the mic though :)

They work well most of the time, but sometimes flop around a bit depending on how tight the handle is. You can get a bracket for it, but then you are back to modding the amp. I usually put them on the bottom. A gooseneck lets you get different positions easily, it's a great idea!:)
