Well, I finally got it!!! My Shure 57 and a cheap Beringer mixer. Hooked it up ... tested it out and my recordings finally sound alive! IT'S ALIVE!!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!

So, my question is about mic placement. I hear that this is crucial to recordings. See, I would think to place it about 1 inch away from the amp directly in the center.

Anybody have any tips about mic placement and what the differences are in the sound?

Absolutely. Experiment. Try the mic anywhere and everywhere. Use your ears and decide what you think sounds best to you. There is no "one spot" that fits all sources and rooms. You have to hunt for it. And as far as the mic up close to the amp, that's as good a place as any to start. Put your amp up on a chair to de-couple it from the floor and start experimenting.
