mic into a pedal???

can you put connect a mic to a guitar pedal, and then from the pedal into a mixer? i know this is probably a stupid question, but i wanted to nkow if it was possible and what kind of quality you would get out of it????
 
Interesting question. I would imagine you 'could' do this. you would need some way of changing from mic to line to go into the pedal. Maybe you could use a DI box in reverse. Plug the mic into the DI box, 1/4" out of the DI into the pedal, then the pedal into your mixer. I have never tried this but it may work.

Let me know what you find out.
 
im not sure what you mean exactly. I was thinking that i could get two cables that have one XLR plug and on the other end a 1/4 inch jack and connect one from the mic to the pedal and then from the pedal to the mixer.
 
Well, lets get the signal levels down first (from weakest to strongest)

1. Mic (LowZ)
2. Instrument (HiZ)
3. Line
4. Speaker

You want send a LowZ mic level signal through a processor that is designed to handle HiZ instrument level signals. Then send a wet instrument level signal to an input on your mixer looking for a LowZ mic level. It won't sound too good. It will probably be very noisy. When you send it through the mic pre it will only amplify the noise. Unless if you're going for something artsy with it, it probably won't turn out that great.

Heres my advice: Instead of running the pedal in series with your mic, run it through the aux send/return on your board. That way you can mix your wet signal with the dry. Then you won't be sending the effect through a mic preamp and on top of that you'll have more control over it. Record your vocals dry. Add the effect at mix down. -Joe

Experiment! you probably aren't gonna break anything... Like I said, if you wanna be experimental and artsy you can do whatever you want.

With that DI thing... if it IS possible to run a signal through a DI backwards (I have my doubts), the only way it would be effective is if you had 2 DIs; One to turn the signal from mic to instrument level (the reversed flow one), and another to turn the processed instrument level signal back into mic level. That way you're giving the mic pre what it wants: a mic level signal. Wheather it would be less noisy.. maybe. Just because the majority of the time you would be running your signal through a balanced XLR cable and that would mean less interference (the only time it would be vulnerable to inereference is when your signal is going between the two DI's). -Joe
 
Just do it and find out how it sounds. You won't harm your mic or anything.

I once had a FOH job and the vocalist had a board full of stomp boxes where he had put his micrphone in. His sound was spectacular.

There are jack to jack transformers like Chip mentioned, hi Z to low Z and transformers are reversable.
 
Just plug your mic into the mixer and use the pedal as an insert. I've done this many times with decent enough effect.
