Mic-ing an Amp w/ Toneport or other?

hey everyone
had a question about home recording. tried to do as much research ahead of time, but things can get tricky quick. im a single guy (no band) interested in recording some electric guitar licks and maybe even doing some cover tunes. im not talented enough to sing and play at the same time, but im sure sound editing software will help me lay multiple tracks together. i would also like to capture some acoustic work so ill obviously need a mic and the shure sm57 seems the way to go.

my specific question regards what equipment to buy if im willing and able to mic up an amp. i at first was nearly sold on the line 6 toneport as the standard way to go for home recording, but it seems a lot of that units virtue lies in its ability to plug a guitar in direct without an amp. Since I am willing to mic up an amp, is there some different recording hardware I should go with?
 
I havent used the toneport myself, but it sounds like it will do the job for you, micing, or direct if you need/want to some day. I would also recommend the es-57 found at www.speakerrepair.com. Its a $30 57 copy that sounds excellent and you can get a pack of three for less than the price of a real 57. I've got a song from a demo I was working on that I used the es-57 on if you want to hear how good it can sound.
 
yeah that would be great. im all for saving some money if the product is comparable
